The Wailers to Bedouin: The DJs and bands to see in the UAE this week
Here's a look at the acts playing this weekend across the clubs and festivals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Reggae royalty, rave music pioneers and New York DJs with Arab roots are all playing in the UAE this weekend.
Bob Marley Birthday Festival featuring The Original Wailers
Each outing of this Abu Dhabi stalwart is held on the weekend closest to Marley’s birthday (February 6) and features artists associated with the legend. This year, we get Marley’s official backing band, The Original Wailers, featuring the musicians who once shared the stage with Marley. While you won’t get the full band (72-year-old band leader and reggae legend Aston “Family Man” Barrett can’t make it), guitarist Junior Marvin and other members will be on hand.
Friday, 4pm, Yas Beach, Saadiyat Island, tickets cost Dh130, available at abu-dhabi.platinumlist.net
Groove on the Grass featuring Underworld
The British electronic music pioneers will headline the first Groove on the Grass of 2019. After shooting to fame in 1996, on the back of their hit Born Slippy (Nuxx), which was featured in the cult 1996 film Trainspotting, the Welsh duo, Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, continue to innovate with new material. Also on the bill are British dance veterans Leftfield who will perform a DJ set.
Friday, 5pm, Emirates Golf Club, tickets from Dh295, available at dubai.platinumlist.net
This cool New York City duo is made up of Egyptian Rami Abousabe and Jordanian Tamer Malki. Under the name Bedouin, the pair went on to fashion a sound that stays abreast of the latest dance trends, while infusing Middle Eastern rhythms, riffs and vocals. The boys return to Dubai as part of a global run of shows that include European and North American club stops.
