“How terribly strange to be 70,” sang Simon & Garfunkel on Old Friends back in 1968. Simon is almost 70 himself now, but this playful, sometimes deeply searching album sounds anything but jaded.
Striking a neat balance between the more traditional fare of Simon’s early solo records and the world-music tropes of later works such as Graceland, its cast includes a pilgrim contemplating a billboard poster of Jay-Z while crossing the Brooklyn Bridge, and a would-be scriptwriter working at the car wash.
Fans will adore the exquisitely orchestrated Love in Hard Times and the joyous, Malian kora-infused Rewrite.
