She has performed with some of the world’s top orchestras, including the London and Moscow Philharmonics.

And tomorrow night, UAE audiences will get to marvel at the talent of the Russian pianist Katya Apekisheva at Madinat Theatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The event is part of The Score Classical (www.thescore.ae), a series of international concerts and programmes.

Apekisheva, who will be performing pieces by her favourite composers, Edvard Grieg, Frederic -Chopin and Modest Mussorgsky, says it is the idea of performing in Dubai that fascinates her.

“I understand the classical music scene is developing fast in Dubai so it’s very exciting for me. I’m looking forward to performing there,” she says.

After moving from Moscow to London in 1994 to study at the Royal College of Music, Apekisheva quickly made a name for herself.

One year later, she was awarded the college’s highest award, the President’s Rose Bowl, presented by The Prince of Wales for Most Outstanding Pianist of The Year. She went on to win both The London Philharmonic Soloist of the Year and the Terence Judd Awards in 1996.

“It’s a profound art, the most special kind because it’s so abstract and speaks from the heart,” says Apekisheva. “Music offers the most intimate of expressions.”

After the Dubai concert, Apekisheva will return to the UK to spend time with her 5-month-old daughter before performing at the Oxford May Festival, then touring Europe and North America.

• Concert starts at 7.45pm tomorrow. Tickets cost from Dh125 to Dh250 from www.madinattheatre.com and www.timeouttickets.com
