Singer Rufus Wainwright will bring his mix of contemporary and classical sound to the Dubai Opera.

The award-winning vocalist known for hits such as Hallelujah from the Shrek soundtrack, Across the Universe and The One You Love will perform on December 6.

The 43-year-old has released eight studio albums and three live recordings has also collaborated with stars including Elton John, Boy George, Pet Shop Boys and  producer Mark Ronson.

In addition to his music, Wainwright's first opera Prima Donna also enjoyed a solid international run during 2009. The songs from the production was released in a double album (also called Prima Donna) that same year. Wainwright is currently working on a new opera to be released in October next year.

Wainwright comes to Dubai on the back of his latest album, the theatrically themed Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets, which features adaptations of the great bard's works with guest appearances by an eclectic array of actors including the late Carrie Fisher Helena Bonham Carter and William Shatner. The album was released in tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.

Wainright also paid tribute to a modern day legend, with the release of his take of Stevie Wonder's  Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours), a song he describes as " one of the great happy/sad hits of all times. Listen to the lyrics, so gloomy and touching, but with a really up melody. Unfortunately a duality not often mastered in this day and age."

Jasper Hope, Chief Executive at Dubai Opera, said: “From Carnegie Hall to Covent Garden, Rufus Wainwright has graced the stages of the world’s most famous stages with sell-out shows and sensational performances.

“I am delighted he’s agreed to add Dubai Opera to that list and I know we’re in for an unmissable night of outstanding music and musicianship this December.”

Tickets are Dh295 and will be on sale midday on July 20. For more, visit www.dubaiopera.com
