Olivier Award-winning singer Lea Salonga, who has voiced two Disney princesses in her wide-ranging career, will perform at Dubai Opera next year.

Salonga, who in 1991 became the first Asian woman to win a Tony Award for her performance as Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, will take to the stage at Dubai Opera on March 5 and 6. She will perform a selection of Broadway hits, songs from Disney films and tracks from her 11 solo albums.

In her 30-year career, Salonga, 48, has performed in some of the biggest theatre productions around the world, including Les Miserables, in which she has sung the parts of Eponine and Fantine, and the recent Grammy Award-nominated Broadway revival of Once on This Island, in which she starred as the Goddess of Love, Erzulie. She has sung at the Sydney Opera House, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and London's O2 Arena.

Salonga has also enjoyed a successful solo career. She was the first Filipino singer to sign with an international record label and her 1993 self-titled third album was multi-platinum selling. Her 1999 album, By Heart, sold two million copies worldwide.

But Salonga, who last performed at Dubai Opera in 2017, is perhaps best known for providing the singing voices for two Disney princesses: Jasmine in Aladdin (1992) and Fa Mulan in Mulan (1998) and Mulan 2 (2004). In 2011, she was named as a "Disney Legend" by the Walt Disney Company.

Chief executive at Dubai Opera, Jasper Hope, said of the upcoming shows: “Lea Salonga gave two sold-out and amazing performances at Dubai Opera in 2017 and I am delighted she’s agreed to return in 2020 to once again thrill fans with her incredible talent.”

Tickets to see Salonga are on sale now and start at Dh250. There is also a 20 per cent early bird offer on VIP, Platinum and Gold seating, valid until July 21.
