Depeche Mode to headline Abu Dhabi's F1 2013 concerts
Depeche Mode will headline the Abu Dhabi Formula One race day concert. The British synth-pop legends will perform in the prized slot at Yas Island’s du Arena on Sunday November 3.
Access to the concert is available to those with race tickets. Depeche Mode’s annoucement was part of a press conference held today by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Cultural Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), Yas Marina Circuit and Flash Entertainment, on the sidelines of the Arabian Travel Market at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
When booking bands to perform at the F1 concerts, Mike Fairburn, director of marketing for Flash Entertainment, said the company has three criteria. In addition to the band’s track record for selling live shows, they must appeal to a broad range of customers. “Thirdly, and this is important, is that this is a flagship event,” he said. “So the band must reach the standard and Depeche Mode have that calibre.”
The British trio are in the midst a new world tour promoting their 13th album Delta Machine, released back in March. At a press conference earlier this month in Paris to announce the new global trek, frontman Dave Gahan expressed the group’s enthusiasm to hit the road after a three year break. “Performance is a very emotional thing,” he said. “To be able to really feel it is something very raw and very emotional - to the point that sometimes by the end of the show it is really difficult to say goodbye, because you experienced something together."
Formed in 1980 in Essex, Depeche Mode sold over 100 million albums and are renowned as one of the leading proveryors of synth-pop. Named after a French fashion magazine, the group’s 13 albums are home to a plethora of hits including 1981’s Just Can’t Get Enough and Dreaming of Me, Enjoy the Silence (1990), You’re No Good (1994) and Precious (2005).
