They make up roughly half the population, but women don't get an explicit mention in Lebanon's national anthem – until now.

Lebanese singer Carole Samaha has recorded a tweaked version of the nation's patriotic song, originally penned by Rashid Nakhle, to include an homage to the women of her home country.

The Rouh Fell star released a video this weekend in which she sang the updated version, first released by An-Nahar newspaper, that features an addition in the first verse.

Whereas the original, which was adopted as Lebanon's national anthem in 1927, pays tribute to "our mountain and our valley, they bring forth stalwart men", the revised sentence states "they bring forth stalwart women and men".

"You [women] are the very soul of the revolution and the anthem," the singer told her fans in the clip's caption.

The updated version imagines the anthem "in a new feminist way", Samaha's YouTube channel added.

The accompanying video to the updated song shows groups of women protesting in Lebanon, where demonstrations have been ongoing for more than three weeks. The country's financial troubles sparked mass protests on October 17, forcing Prime Minister Saad Hariri to resign on October 29.

Women have presented a strong front at the protests, with stars such as singer Elissa and actress Nadine Nassib Njeim joining the ranks of those calling for change.

The altered anthem was first published by An-Nahar, in an issue of the Lebanese newspaper dedicated to the women of the "revolution".

The original anthem, composed by Wadih Sabra, was adopted on July 12, 1927.

The original Lebanese national anthem:

All of us! For our country, for our glory and flag!

Our valour and our writings are the envy of the ages.

Our mountain and our valley, they bring forth stalwart men.

And to perfection we devote our words and labour.

All of us! For our country, for our glory and flag!

All of us! For our country.

Our elders and our children, they await our country's call,

And on the day of crisis they are as lions of the jungle.

The heart of our East is ever Lebanon,

God has preserved him until the end of time.

All of us! For our country, for our glory and flag!

All of us! For our country.

The gems of the East are his land and sea.

Throughout the world his good deeds flow from Pole to Pole.

And his name is his glory since time began.

The cedars are his pride, his immortality's symbol.

All of us! For our country, for our glory and flag!

All of us! For our country.
