Moroccan singer Jamila El Badaoui has made a career out of singing Khaleeji songs. Her masterful command of the dialect made hits of her two singles Ya weel hali and Yegoulou Yegoulou and triggered a growing fan base across the UAE and the wider Gulf.
How about the reception back home? Speaking before her performance last night in Rabat's Mawazine Festival, the Dubai based singer admitted some segments of Moroccan society are unhappy she is singing in a foreign dialect. "But you do get people like that everywhere," she said.
"Just because I sing Khaleeji songs it doesn't mean that I have abandoned my culture. It's just that I love the Khaleeji style of music. But now I am back in Morocco to sing in front of my fans here. Despite I live far away from here, Morocco always feel like home to me.
