Kanye West performs at Kazakh wedding
Kanye West plays at Kazakh wedding
Kanye West was the surprise guest at a wedding party in Almaty of the grandson of the Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, according to Kazakh media. Aisultan Nazarbayev celebrated his marriage to Alima Boranbayeva on Saturday at the Royal Tulip Almaty, the Tengri News website reported. It published pictures that guests had posted on their Instagram and social networking sites of West attending the party. There was also footage of him performing in front of the cheering guests. The celebrity website TMZ said he was paid about US$3 million (Dh11m) for the private performance. President Nazarbayev has been repeatedly criticised by rights groups for his authoritarian rule. Such appearances by celebrities in autocratic Central Asia have backfired for stars in the past. Jennifer Lopez was criticised for appearing at a birthday party for Turkmenistan’s president, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, in June. Sting cancelled a concert he was scheduled to give in Kazakhstan in July 2011, blaming human rights violations. – AFP
Kapoors to take on sequel to Khans’s Andaz Apna Apna
Rajkumar Santoshi is planning a sequel to his 1994 cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna and apparently wants Ranbir Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor for the lead roles, played by Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in the original film, reported the Mumbai Mirror. “Santoshi wanted to work with the Khans but because getting dates from them is an impossible task, he might go ahead with the Kapoors, who are both young and commercially viable,” said a production source. An official announcement hasn’t been made yet. Santoshi’s new film Phata Poster Nikla Hero, starring Shahid Kapoor, will be out in the UAE on September 19. – The National staff

Pope Francis biopic in the works
An Argentine director is planning a biopic of his fellow countryman Pope Francis’s life, from his upbringing in Buenos Aires to his election as the leader of the world’s Roman Catholics. Alejandro Agresti, who directed 2006’s The Lake House, will direct the film titled Historia de un cura (A Priest’s Tale). Rodrigo de la Serna (2004’s The Motorcycle Diaries) will play Pope Francis. “More than a rapid biopic of key events, I’m more concerned with getting inside this very singular person,” Agresti told Variety. Shooting will be split between Argentina, Italy and Germany. – Reuters
