Jude Law is part of the panel judging the shortlisted six submissions in Image Nation's short film competition, Arab Film Studio. His fellow jurors include the director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada), the Emirati filmmaker Nawaf Al-Janahi and the chair of Hyde Park Entertainment Ashok Amritraj. The finalists are entries from the UAE, Egypt, Oman, Algeria, Syria and USA. An award ceremony will be held on Monday at the Yas Viceroy Hotel in Abu Dhabi. – The National staff
Brad Pitt's World War Z imagines a world overrun by zombies, leading to an unlikely new global power structure. Two of the few countries that have kept the zombies at bay are Israel, which shelters Israelis and Palestinians behind a wall, and North Korea, which has removed the teeth of its citizens to prevent biting. It's a portrait of geopolitics that's left some critics scratching their heads. "In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a wall is a heavily fraught symbol. But here it turns into an instrument of peace?" said the Los Angeles Times' Steven Zeitchik. Sean "Diddy" Combs is launching a TV network in the fall. Revolt TV, he says, will "focus on music and not reality shows". Referencing how MTV has shifted to reality TV, Diddy said: "I wanted my MTV, but I didn't want to complain about it, I wanted to do something about it." He said Oprah Winfrey, who launched her OWN network in 2011, warned him of the hardships of owning a network. "One of the things I did learn from Oprah is that this is a marathon, not a sprint." – AP
Chris Brown has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run car accident. Brown took to Twitter to proclaim his innocence over the accident on May 21, saying he had exchanged insurance details with the female driver. "I have a valid driver's licence and I gave the woman the right info. She saw cameras and wanted to make a scene. She contacted the cops thinking of a payday from Chris Brown. This is really ridiculous." Brown was charged with one count each of hit-and-run and driving without a valid licence. Reports said Brown rear-ended a Mercedes with his Range Rover near Toluca Lake, north of Los Angeles. – AFP
Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna have released their newborn daughter's baby picture. According to Tatum, the choice was simple: be hounded by paparazzi, or control the release of the picture. He posted a family photo on his official Facebook page. While promoting his new film White House Down, the 33-year-old said it was important to take "stalking photographers" out of the equation. "We have paparazzi out in front of everything trying to get the first picture. And we didn't want to sell it." Tatum added: "We just wanted to let the fans and whoever wanted to see it, and that's it." – AP
