Joey Essex to throw Dubai beach party
Joey Essex from the British hit reality television series The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) is back in Dubai tomorrow to host The Only Way is Essex party on Nasimi Beach at Atlantis, The Palm. The night will feature another of the show’s stars, Lauren Pope, who will take to the Nasimi stage to perform a DJ set. Other members of the cast will also be present to enjoy the night, which we are sure will feature on a forthcoming episode of the show. What is it that keeps bringing members of TOWIE’s cast back to our fair shores? On New Year’s Eve, the TOWIE bad boy Mark Wright hosted a party at Atlantis, while only last week Joey Essex proposed to Sam Faiers at an undisclosed poolside location in Dubai. There are also rumours that a TOWIE movie will be filmed in the UAE. Entrance to the event is free before 7pm; after, tickets cost Dh100. Call 055 200 4321 to book tables. – The National staff
Colbert lures Clinton to Twitter
Stephen Colbert lured Bill Clinton to Twitter on The Colbert Report on Monday, signing him up with the handle @PrezBillyJeff. Clinton dictated his first message to Colbert, who typed: “Just spent an amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane? He is cool!” Whether Clinton would continue to use the account remained uncertain. Colbert’s hand is clearly in the account’s bio, too. It reads: “Stephen Colbert is my BFF.” By Tuesday, the account had more than 120,000 followers. – AP
Lohan tells Letterman rehab is a ‘blessing’
Lindsay Lohan is going into rehab next month but first she had to face David Letterman. In an appearance on the Late Show on Tuesday, Lohan was pressed by Letterman about her rehab stint – she faces a 90-day stay as part of a plea deal in a misdemeanour traffic accident case. Letterman tried to draw her out, asking how many times she’d been in rehab, how this time would be different and what she would be treated for. Lohan looked uncomfortable and said she didn’t expect the line of questioning but added that she wanted to be healthy and focus on what she loves – her work. She said that she looks at rehab as “a blessing and not a curse”. – AP
Carla Bruni scores hit with album
The former French first lady Carla Bruni’s new album, Little French Songs, rose to second place in France’s music charts only a week after being released. The new album is the 45-year-old Italian-born’s fourth and her first since 2008’s Comme Si De Rien N’Était (Simply). Bruni’s musical career was put on hold while Sarkozy, who was defeated by François Hollande in last May’s presidential vote, was in office. The album includes a song called The Penguin, which the French media say is a veiled swipe at Hollande, depicting him as a bumbling buffoon with no manners. – AFP
Kellan Lutz to star as Hercules
Kellan Lutz has signed on to star in Hercules 3-D, a new big-budget take on the Greek demigod. The filmmaker Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2) is directing the US$70 million (Dh257m) epic, which begins production next month in Bulgaria. “It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history – and Kellan has exactly that – personality,” Harlin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character and he impressed me with his passion and heart.” The movie is one of two Hercules movies being made in Hollywood; Brett Ratner is also directing one that will be headlined by Dwayne Johnson. – The National staff
