We've been pronouncing Charlize Theron's name incorrectly: 'it's not even remotely close'
The South Africa-born actor demonstrated how to properly say her surname during a TV appearance on Tuesday night
It turns out most people have been saying Charlize Theron's surname wrong all this time.
During an appearance on British TV series The One Show on Tuesday night, the South Africa-born actor was asked by host Gethin Jones whether it is correct to put the emphasis on the first or second syllable of her last name.
But it's neither, the Oscar winner revealed.
"The truth of the matter is those are not even remotely close to the real pronunciation," she said with a laugh.
It's actually pronounced more like the word "throne", with a slight roll of the "r", as the name originates in France, she said.
At the 44-second mark in this video she says her name with the correct pronunciation:
The Monster star appeared on the show via video link to discuss her new film, The Old Guard, which will be released on Netflix on Friday, July 10, across the world, including here in the UAE.
In it, she plays a centuries-old warrior who leads a covert group of immortal mercenaries who have fought to protect the mortal world from the shadows for centuries.
The action-thriller has been adapted from the graphic novel series of the same name by Greg Rucka, and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, KiKi Layne and Matthias Schoenaerts.
Theron also has two more films due to come out. Fast & Furious 9, in which she plays Cipher, is currently in post-production, with a release date of 2021. She will also take up the role of Lorraine Broughton again in Atomic Blonde 2.
