For Sama and The Cave, both filmed in Syria, have received Oscar nominations for Best Documentary Feature this year.
Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts's devastating documentary For Sama, constructed using first-person footage by Kateab, was shot over five years in Aleppo.
The film highlights and personalises the country’s heartbreaking conflict and the resilience and suffering of its people.
For Sama has picked up several awards including Prix L'Oeil d'Or for Best Documentary at Cannes Film Festival last year and Best British Independent Film at the British Independent British Awards.
Last week, it also received four Bafta nominations in the following categories: Documentary, Outstanding British Film, Film Not in English Language and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.
In The Cave, Oscar-nominated director Feras Fayyad follows the story of Dr Amani Ballour, a paediatrician who stayed in Eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, to work in a makeshift underground hospital.
This isn't Fayyad's first Oscar nomination. In 2017, his film Last Men in Aleppo was nominated for Best Documentary Feature, but lost to American film Icarus.
The other films nominated in the same category this year are The Edge of Democracy, Honeyland and American Factory.
