We got our first look at Robert Pattinson's Batman when a teaser trailer dropped in August. However, today we have been given our best look at the Twilight actor's take on the caped crusader, as the cast have been spotted filming in Liverpool, England.
The cast and crew of the Matt Reeves-directed movie were filming in the northern English city, outside St George's Hall. Pattinson was spotted in character, wearing a long black coat over a black suit in the shots. It seems they were filming a funeral scene.
Also on set was an almost-unrecognisable Colin Farrell. The Irish actor is to play Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in the superhero movie.
It has not been smooth sailing for The Batman's production team. The movie has been delayed until 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic after it was originally scheduled for an October 2021 release. Last month, the set was shutdown when Pattinson contracted Covid-19. The filming was also stopped back in March this year, at the height of early global lockdowns.
It is not clear how long filming will continue in Liverpool, as yesterday the city was the first fall under a high alert classification, as part of the British government's new rules. It pubs, bars and gyms are to close in the coming days.
What we know about 'The Batman' so far
The teaser trailer for The Batman was released at the virtual DC FanDome event in August. We don't hear much from him in the teaser, but the little he does say in in The Batman teaser trailer has certainly had an impact.
The teaser didn't only give us a first look at Pattinson as Batman, but we also saw Paul Dano’s Riddler, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman and Farrell.
The film also stars Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon.
The teaser trailer runs at 2:23 minutes, a sizeable first look.
In the trailer, we see Batman get into a fist fight, which begins with him saying, "I'm vengeance" – a hint that he has found the people who killed his parents, perhaps?
Much of the teaser centres on a mysterious villain leaving notes for Batman at crime scenes across Gotham.
Of the film, Reeves has said: "Without being an origin story for him, it’s something that touches upon his origins."
He added that it was inspired by classic neo-noir films such as Chinatown and Taxi Driver, and that we will meet a "very human and very flawed" Bruce Wayne in his second year as Batman, trying to solve a series of crimes.
