Sharjah Media City to make UAE's first crowdsourced movie
Shams partners with Arab Format Lab on "Emirates Entertainment Experience"
Sharjah Media City (Shams) has partnered with Dubai-based production house Arab Format Lab to launch The Emirates Entertainment Experience, touted as the first project of its kind in film and television production in the Arab world. The project is set to culminate in the UAE’s first “crowdsourced” movie, as well as offering training and development for participants.
The Emirates Entertainment Experience is set to be an interactive platform for “films made by audience members,” according to the chairman of Shams, HE Dr. Khalid Omar Al Midfa, and is based on trials that have already taken place in Holland, China, South Korea and Turkey It is also intended to identify new talent in the filmmaking industry.
Expanding on the theme, Al Midfa, said: “As part of this project, we will launch an Emirati film made by audience members. In an interactive community of UAE-based talents, a group of scriptwriters, actors, directors and people who are skilled with respect to audio, cinematography, lighting, music composition, graphics and interior design will compete.”
He added that that the aim of the agreement is to develop the film industry’s infrastructure and nurture young Emirati and Arab talents in all areas of film and television production. The project also looks to stimulate startups and provide long-term training and workshops, as well as a “crowdsourced” movie, and awards for the participants recognising talent for scriptwriting, directing, acting, cinematography, lighting, design, music and graphics.
