Move over Wave, another Filipina superhero is in town. Wave, an aquatic Filipina heroine, first appeared in Marvel Comics’ War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas in May. Now her creator Greg Pak has revealed that he is working on a second Filipina character.

He didn’t give much away, but we know she will be appearing alongside the Chinese superhero Aero in issue number three of her comic book series, and he assures us she will be “awesome.”

He'll be introducing the new Pinoy superhero with award-winning writer Alyssa Wong and artist Pop Mhan.

Wong is half-Filipina and was recently tasked by Marvel Comics to write the backstory for Wave. She is mainly a science-fiction writer who has won a Nebula Award, a World Fantasy Award and a Locus Award for her works.

Marvel is on something of a high currently – it recently brought the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a close, with Avengers: Endgame breaking box office records in the process, and the comics are going just as strong.

Marvel has also been diversifying the characters in both its comic books and movies in the process. Black Panther and Captain Marvel represented Marvel’s first black and female on-screen leads, while New Agents of Atlas gave the comics their first Asian superhero team.

We’ve already been promised cinema’s first on-screen Muslim super hero, Ms Marvel, by Marvel chief Greg Feige, and the recent Spiderman: Far From Home gave us the first hijabi character in a super hero movie in the shape of Zoha Rahman’s Zoha. We were also left with a black Captain America to look forward to at the end of Endgame. Could our Filipina heroes be the next to join the ever-diversifying MCU? Only time will tell.
