It's been an exciting week for film fans in Abu Dhabi as Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds began shooting his latest movie in the capital. The month-long shoot for thriller 6 Underground is set to take place at various locations across the UAE, including the Liwa desert, Abu Dhabi city, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah.

But this week, filming has been taking place in the City of Lights area on Reem Island, and has been attracting big crowds.

One fan managed to come face-to-face with the Deadpool star on Wednesday night during a break from filming. Daniel O'Shaughnessy took to Twitter to share his joy at being able to tell his favourite actor he was "a legend" just two blocks away from his apartment.

This is the area of Abu Dhabi where the movie has been spotted filming:

And it seems Reynold’s is equally excited to be in Abu Dhabi. “Shooting in Abu Dhabi is going to be one of the highlights of this production, although you’ll have to wait until the movie hits Netflix to find out why," he said earlier this week. "We’ve only been here a few days so far, but the welcome from everyone has been amazing and I can’t wait to explore Abu Dhabi more.”

Action director Michael Bay, who's known for The Rock and the Transformers franchise, added: “Abu Dhabi is a unique place to make a movie, with a lot of great looks. It’s got the diversity and architecture I need in front of the camera — plus the professional facilities, crew and infrastructure to back it up. I’m very excited to be shooting here over the next few weeks.”

The first pictures of the cast and crew in the city were released earlier this week by twofour54, taken at the Four Seasons Al Maryah Island with Abu Dhabi's downtown skyline in the background.

Six Underground starring Ryan Reynolds to be shot in Abu Dhabi

Is this new casting call for the incoming Michael Bay/Ryan Reynolds Netflix flick '6 Underground?'

_______________

The Netflix film features a host of other Hollywood stars, including Dave Franco, Melanie Laurent, Corey Hawkins, Adria Arjona, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Ben Hardy, Payman Maadi and Lior Raz, star of the Israeli Netflix hit Fauda. Casting calls have also been issued for a multinational bevy of local talent to fill in supporting roles.

Filming is set to move to a new location today, but residents of Reem Island say the set has been huge, with dozens of floodlight and a lot of water, either to create rain or dampen the roads.
