Kate Hudson is facing backlash following her virtual appearance at Sunday's Golden Globes, after she appeared in a room crowded with family members.

The actress, who was nominated for her role in Sia's Music, revealed she was watching the awards from her Los Angeles home alongside her "whole family".

And as the awards ceremony cut to her living room, she appeared tightly packed with her parents, three children, and other members of her family.

The scene sparked backlash from a number of social media users, who questioned whether the gathering was Covid-19 safe.

“We can’t do the awards in person because it’s too dangerous, but please feel free to watch from home on your couch with 20 of your favourite friends and family members,” one person said in a tweet.

“Is it just me or did the amount of people with Kate Hudson seem a little overboard?”, another added.

One user said Hudson was with “more people than I have seen in a year”.

Speaking before the ceremony, Hudson said her family were trying to bring a celebratory feel to the occasion.

"This is my living room and I've got my whole family outside and we're celebrating," she told E! News. "It's been a long time. It's fun. There is that moment, though, when you do awards ceremonies and you get in the car and everybody's waving and then you get to the carpet.

“It’s sort of an adrenaline and I do feel like because I’ve got a big family, my mum and my dad are here and my kids are here, we’re trying to really kind of bring a celebratory feeling to it and it’s fun. I think we should do this more often.”

The Bride Wars star posted two looks to her Instagram page ahead of the ceremony. Posing for photographer Matt Sayles, she wore a tailored white asymmetrical dress.

“Just because we're doing the Golden Globes from home doesn’t mean I’m not gonna bring the same old fashion vibes to my couch! Going to miss seeing all my friends and having that night altogether but I am very excited to celebrate some amazing work this past year,” she wrote.

Later, she changed into a full evening gown by Louis Vuitton. The black, off-the-shoulder, frill sleeved gown featured silver beadwork on the bodice, a drop frill waist and a leather belt.

The Golden Globes took place on Sunday evening, marking the return of Hollywood’s awards season. The in-person awards took place bi-coastally for the first time, with ceremonies happening in both New York and LA. However, many stars, such as Hudson, dialled in from home.
