Egypt’s gamers, otakus, cosplayers and artists gathered to celebrate their love for comic book culture in the seventh iteration of EgyCon. The convention, held at Cairo’s The Greek Campus on January 31, attracted audiences by the thousands. The event featured cosplay competitions, miniature car races and live performances of beloved anime songs.

EgyCon originally started in 2013 with a series of small gatherings. The first convention was organised in 2014 to accommodate the increasing turnout. It was initially set up as a meet up between otakus – a Japanese term for people with interests in anime and manga – but it quickly grew to become a celebration of all things pop culture.
