The Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee has approved the reopening of cinemas at 30 per cent operating capacity, announcing it on Twitter on Saturday morning.

Precautionary measures will be put in place for customers and staff members, who will be required to wear masks and maintain social distancing. Venues will also be required to sanitise regularly.

Cinemas across the capital have already started to reopen on Sunday morning.

A staff member at Novo Cinemas, which has branches at the World Trade Centre Abu Dhabi and Bawabat Al Sharq Mall, confirmed to The National that two customers can now sit together in the theatre, with an empty seat between each group of two.

Sanitisers have been set up throughout the cinemas and masks will be available to buy at the venue, the staff member said.

A deep clean and sanitisation of all areas will take place four times a day, he confirmed.

The films currently showing include family-friendly options such as Raya and The Last Dragon and Tom and Jerry, as well as horror flicks The Owners and Behind You, and Golden Globes winner The Mauritanian.

Cinemas were ordered to close in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain on February 5, as more restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 were introduced.

Previously, cinemas in the capital closed in March 2020, but were granted permission to reopen at limited capacity in August, with precautions such as mandatory masks and social distancing.
