The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Monday at 5am UAE time in Los Angeles, US and there were a few surprises on the night.

From sparks between old flames to history being made by a foreign film, these were the top moments from the night.

'Parasite' wins best performance by a cast in a motion picture

As the SAG Awards are all about the acting, the coveted SAG award for outstanding performance by a cast is considered the equivalent of Best Picture. This year, Parasite became the first foreign film to ever win – and when the cast of Bong Joon Ho's drama/mystery/black comedy took to the stage to receive it, they also got a standing ovation and extended applause. It was their second standing ovation of the night by that point, as it also happened when the film was introduced, before the award was even announced.

Kang-ho Song, So-Dam Park, Woo-sik Choi, Jeong-eun Lee and Sun-kyun Lee spoke Korean on stage and through a translator Kang-ho Song said: "Although the film is called Parasite I believe the story is about coexistence and how we can all live together."

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston get people talking

The former couple, who were married between 2000 and 2005, both won big on the night. Pitt bagged the best supporting male actor award for his role in Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, and joked in his speech that he'd now have to update his Tindr profile. Meanwhile, Aniston won best actress in a drama series for her role in AppleTV's The Morning Show (her first SAG win since 1996 when she got outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series with the cast of Friends).

It wasn't their awards that got people talking, however: it was the tender moments they shared throughout the night, sending the rumour mill running into overtime about a potential re-kindling of their old romance. There are lovely pictures of Pitt backstage watching on the monitors while Aniston received her award, while another shows the pair later congratulating each other on their successes.

Joaquin Phoenix dedicates his award to Heath Ledger

Joaquin Pheonix went home with the top award for a male actor in a leading role for his part in the much-acclaimed Joker. It is the first time he's won a SAG award. He started his speech by shouting out to his fellow nominees: Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver and Taron Egerton.

To DiCaprio, he said: "You've been an inspiration for over 25 years to me and so many people." He also asked Bale to "just suck once", adding "you commit to your roles in ways I could only dream of".

His most touching tribute, however, went to his favourite actor and fellow Joker Heath Ledger, who died in 2008 after famously playing the role in The Dark Knight, for which he posthumously won an Academy Award. "I'm standing here on the shoulders of my favourite actor, Heath Ledger, so, thank you," Phoenix said in his speech.

The 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' cast bigs up 'Fleabag'

The cast of Amazon Prime's Marvelous Mrs. Maisel took home the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series, but it seems they believe there was a more deserving winner.

"I voted for Fleabag," said actress Alex Borstein, as she kicked off the acceptance speech. "This is really weird. This makes no sense ... Fleabag is brilliant. You guys are brilliant."

The beloved British comedy show didn't go home empty-handed, however, as writer, director and actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge received the award for best actress in a comedy series.

The father-and-son 'I'm an actor' intros

Eugene and Dan Levy threatened to steal the show before it had even begun, as the Schitt's Creek father and son duo brought a little comedy to the SAG Awards' traditional "I'm an actor" introductions, which open the night.

They followed Christina Applegate and Cynthia Erivo, who spoke about their first acting jobs. Eugene first described in great detail how he got into the acting business, before his son cut him off to tell him he's "taken three times as long as everybody else and you're still not finished". Deadpan, Eugene replied: "My story's complex."

Dan then informs his father that poor Tom Hanks won't get the chance to share his own story, to which Eugene says Hanks will "take it well". Cue a shot of Hanks, looking annoyed.

Eugene also said he sees "a lot of De Niro in my own work".

Perhaps they'll be the next favourite hosting duo making the awards circuit?
