China’s richest man aims to rival Hollywood

An ambitious studio complex built by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin, will be a major boost for the country’s film industry but experts say it needs more than sprawling grounds to rival Hollywood. Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kate Beckinsale (pictured) showed up on Sunday for the lavish event to showcase plans for the Oriental Movie Metropolis, set to span 376 hectares, in the port city of Qingdao. The 50 billion yuan (Dh30 billion) complex will house 20 studios that will turn out 100 films a year, including 30 foreign productions. Jianlin’s conglomerate Wanda last year acquired the American cinema chain AMC Entertainment to become China’s third-biggest cinema operator and the world’s largest cinema chain. – AFP

Vidya Balan to play a detective in Bobby Jasoos

The Bollywood actress Vidya Balan is all set to deliver another smashing character depiction – she is going to play the title role in Bobby Jasoos, Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha’s next production. “The idea of playing a female detective was irresistible. Also, the movie title intrigued me,” said Balan. “I’ve known Dia and Sahil for years now. They are the kind of producers every actor wants to work with. But the final clincher for me was director Samar Shaikh and Sanyuktha Chawla’s script. It kept me hooked and I am really looking forward to working with them.” Filming begins in November. Lindsay Lohan’s mum due in court on DWI charge

Lindsay Lohan’s mother has been summoned to a suburban New York court to answer drink-driving charges. The state police say the 50-year-old Dina Lohan was stopped earlier this month for allegedly speeding on a Long Island parkway. A breath test showed the mother of the troubled film actress had a blood-alcohol level that was more than double New York’s legal limit. She was issued tickets for DWI and speeding and ordered to appear in court yesterday. The arrest comes just months after her daughter completed her latest stint in rehab. – AP
