Theodore Melfi's upcoming film Hidden Figures tells the incredible story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, three African-American mathematicians who were central to the 1962 launch of Friendship 7, the mission during which John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth.

The women’s achievements would help the United States to take the lead over the Soviet Union in the Space Race, and are all the more incredible given that they took place in an era of institutionalised racism as the Civil Rights movement raged around them.

The lead characters are played by Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae, while Kevin Costner and Kirten Dunst also appear in the much-anticipated film.

Hidden Figures opens in cinemas across The Gulf region on February 23, 2017.
