Following a hit performance during Middle East Film and Comic Con 2013, Dubai-based Backstage Productions is bringing IDW Publishings 'Kill Shakespeare' to The Fridge in Al Serkal Avenue this weekend. The production, directed by Gautam Goenka, is based on the popular comic series of the same name, written by Anthony Del Col and Conor Mcreery, and is a fusion of all of Shakespeare's greatest heroes including Hamlet, Juliet, Othello and Falstaff against his greatest villains like  Richard III, Lady Macbeth and Iago. It is the first time the show is performed outside the U.S, and Both Del Col and Mcreery were present at MEFCC, and attended the production alongside actor Sean Astin (The Lord of The Rings). For those who missed it, the show starts again this weekend at The Fridge from 11-13 April

“After theatre, comics are my next big love. I had attended MEFCC last year and Anthony and Conor were giving a talk and mentioned they wanted to bring 'Kill Shakespeare' here but could not find a local theatre group, so I immediately approached them after the talk and told them Backstage Productions would be interested,” says Goenka, ahead of the performance.

The show features nine UAE-based actors on stage, with panels from the comic projected behind them.

“It’s like watching a comic book come to life,” says Goenka. “They [Anthony, Conor] really enjoyed it, the exciting thing for them was seeing their production being performed for the first time with such a multi-cultural cast, giving the characters a new flavour.”
