Doha and Sarajevo festivals partner up
The Doha Film Institute and the Sarajevo Film Festival have collaborated on a number of new initiatives at their respective festivals to increase and strengthen connections between Arab and European cinema. The DFI has curated a selection of films from the Arab world, currently being shown at this week’s Sarajevo Film Festival, including Mahdi Fleifel’s A World Not Ours(UK, Lebanon, Denmark; 2012) and Ahd’s Sanctity (Saudi Arabia; 2012). In turn, the Sarajevo Film Festival will select three European films to be screened at the Qumra Film Festival in Doha in March. The DFI will also curate three recent works by Arab filmmakers at next year’s Sarajevo Film Festival and invite recipients of DFI grants to participate in Sarajevo’s CineLink Co-Production Market. – The National staff
Rio mayor begs Woody Allen to make film in his city
Rio de Janeiro’s mayor says he’ll pay “whatever it takes” to get Woody Allen to set one of his films in his city. “I’ll pay 100 per cent of the production,” said Eduardo Paes in an interview published Sunday by the daily O Globo. Allen has made a string of recent movies featuring London, Barcelona, Paris and Rome – and Paes is determined to add Rio to the list. “I’ll pay whatever it takes to get him to come film here,” he said. “I so want him to come. I’ve already done all kinds of things: I talked to his sister and I sent him a message through [the Spanish architect Santiago] Calatrava, who is his neighbour in New York.” Paes said he would put up with the criticism by locals for handing over “the millions that Woody wants”. – AFP
Lindsay Lohan says her troubled past is behind her
Lindsay Lohan says this time it’s going to be different. In an interview that was broadcast on Sunday with Oprah Winfrey, the trouble-prone actress declared that her sixth stint in rehab has put her on the path to recovery. Lohan said she’s in “a different head space” now and vowed to stay “present and clear-headed and focused”. “I feel whole again,” she told Winfrey. “I have such a desire to want to keep this feeling and stay this way. I’m willing to do whatever it takes.” Lohan, 27, completed her latest court-ordered stay in rehab in July. She must continue therapy into late next year. Winfrey asked her what she’s on these days and Lohan replied: “Vitamins.” The actress also said that she takes full blame for her mistakes. When Winfrey asked if she can turn her life around this time, Lohan said with no hesitation: “Yeah.” The interview was broadcast on the Oprah Winfrey Network, which will feature Lohan next year in an eight-part documentary on her life. – AP
Ellie Goulding grabs her first UK No 1
Ellie Goulding hit the top of the British singles charts for the first time on Sunday with her song Burn. Goulding, 26, who performed at the wedding reception of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011, took the No 1 spot from the American singer Miley Cyrus. Lady Gaga’s new single Applause charted at No 5 after it was hurriedly released last Tuesday, almost a week ahead of schedule, when a version was leaked online. The brothers Richard and Adam Johnson, who found fame through a televised British talent show, topped the album chart for a third consecutive week with their debut The Impossible Dream. – Reuters
No charge for Kanye West in scuffle
Kanye West won’t face felony charges after being accused of attacking a photographer at Los Angeles International Airport. But he’s not completely off the hook yet. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said it is declining to prosecute the rapper, but his case will go to the city attorney for possible misdemeanour charges. In the incident on July 19, West scuffled with a member of the paparazzi who staked out the airport to snap celebrity photos. Videos showed West going after a photographer’s camera and trying to wrestle it away. West has had similar run-ins with paparazzi at the airport in the past. – AP
