Canadian comedy Take This Waltz pulled from UAE cinemas

The Canadian romantic comedy Take This Waltz has been taken out of movie theatres across the UAE until it gets re-rated.

The Canadian romantic comedy Take This Waltz has been taken out of movie theatres across the UAE until it gets re-rated.

The film, directed by Sarah Polley and headlined by Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, tells the story of a woman who struggles with her feelings for her husband of five years, while contemplating a new relationship with an artist who lives across the street.

The movie opened in cinemas on Thursday with an 18+ rating, but was pulled the next day after a complaint was made in Abu Dhabi.

Andy Fordham, the public relations manager of Grand Cinemas, said the film is being reviewed again by the National Media Council. "It happens all the time. A movie can go to screen and have particular cuts and sometimes they want to re-review it," he said.

"You have to appeal to the lowest common denominator and if someone from another emirate complains to a higher source, they pull it and re-review it."

Grand Cinemas expects to put the film, which, in its original format, contains several brief sex scenes, back on today, although the extent of the delay will depend on the cuts needed.

Cigdem Yazici of Reel Cinemas confirmed the news. "The movie will not be shown in our theatres," he said.

The filmmaker Sarah Polley had a documentary that screened at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival last week. Stories We Tell, about her family's history, won a special jury award in the ADFF documentary competition.
