Videogame developer Infinity Ward has revealed details, screenshots and gameplay footage of the multiplayer component of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The much-anticipated game was announced at the end of May with a trailer that focused on the single-player campaign and featured the return of a much-beloved character.

On Thursday, the developer and publisher Activision shifted focus to multiplayer, an area the franchise used to completely dominate after setting the tone for the first-person shooter genre for years to come with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007.

The trailer, which is suitable for those 18 years and over, is available on YouTube.

This year’s reboot will be filled to the brim with multiplayer modes, including two-versus-two and traditional six-versus-six Team Deathmatch.

It will also include series stalwarts Domination and Headquarters, Cyber Attack, described as a new spin on Search and Destroy, and Ground War, which will allow more than 100 players to take to the battlefield at the same time.

New game-play mechanics include bullet penetration, gun mounting, door breaching and the use of night-vision goggles in multiplayer maps.

In news that will be welcomed by gamers everywhere, Infinity Award also announced an end to having to pay extra for access to the latest maps and updates.

“We’re doing away with the season pass; we’re delivering a mix of free maps, a ton of content following launch and we’re developing the game for crossplay,” said Patrick Kelly, creative director and co-studio head at Infinity.

"Our goal with Modern Warfare is to bring all gamers together from day one to play together."

An open beta will allow players to put the multiplayer modes through their paces starting next month.

Crossplay is one of the features that will be tested, allowing players on different platforms to play together for the first time in the history of the series.

The dates for the beta are:

PlayStation 4 Exclusive Beta

September 12 -13 (Early Access, PlayStation 4)

September 14 – 16 (Open Beta, PlayStation 4)

Beta featuring crossplay testing

September 19 – 20 (Early Access, PC and Xbox One; Open Beta, PlayStation 4)

September 21 – 23 (Open Beta, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is released worldwide on Friday, October 25, on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
