Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Office, approved the Zayed Encyclopaedia of Poetry, a comprehensive guide and leading reference for the Emirati dialect.

The encylopaedia will include an online platform for poems, offering virtual experiences and will also feature extracts translated into various languages, said Abu Dhabi Media Office.

"The encyclopaedia will include competitions on a variety of related cultural studies, including poetry recitation, singing, calligraphy, visual arts," the media office said. There will be an exhibition telling the story of Arabic poetry and Founding Father Sheikh Zayed's association with this aspect of Emirati culture.

News of the encyclopaedia came after the announcement that Abu Dhabi has developed a strategy for the next five years to promote the Arabic language.

Sheikh Khalid approved the Arabic Language Centre’s strategy for 2020 to 2025, which will focus on four areas to preserve and encourage the use of the language.

These include using Arabic content, developing digital platforms in the language and encouraging research to promote it at all levels.

The centre was established in March under the directives of President Sheikh Khalifa.

The aim of the centre is to bring attention to the Arabic language and encourage its use in all official communication.

It will also perform periodical reviews for Arabic-language curriculums at schools to ensure pupils engage in the content and develop a strong grasp of the tongue.
