Amitabh Bachchan to speak at Sharjah International Book Fair
The Indian film star will take part in a Q+A to launch a new book about his life
Indian film star Amitabh Bachchan will appear at the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) later this month, where he will launch a new book about his career, Sounding Off: Amitabh Bachchan.
Bachchan, who will take part in a Q and A session at 5pm on Wednesday, October 30, is one of India’s most celebrated figures, whose career has spanned five decades. He has won four National Film Awards and in 2015 was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Indian government for his contribution to the arts.
Sounding Off: Amitabh Bachchan is written by Resul Pookutty, an Academy Award-winning sound designer. The first copy of Sounding Off: Amitabh Bachchan will be signed by Bachchan at SIBF, which runs from Wednesday, October 30 to Saturday, November 9.
Alongside the book launch, SIBF is also hosting a photography exhibition, which will explore Bachchan’s life and career.
“In hosting the Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan, we want to highlight the close relationship between films and books, between intellectual production in general and its creative manifestation in international cinema,” said Sharjah Book Authority chairman, Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri.
“At SIBF, we turn the spotlight on how the global cultural landscape is a mosaic of books, novels, poetry and cinema shared by people from all nations. In doing so, these shared cultural treasures create a common link across cultures strengthening sustainable communication.
“We look forward to receiving the Indian superstar in Sharjah, and we are confident that the UAE will be eagerly waiting to see him in person, and listen to him talk about his unique experiences. As the emirate celebrates its international recognition as the World Book Capital 2019, we want to offer an extraordinary experience to our visitors of 200 nationalities who have made the UAE their second home.”
Bachchan, who recently celebrated his 77th birthday, made his first appearance in a film in 1969 with a minor narrator role in the National Award-winning Bhuvan Shome. He has since appeared in more than 230 films, including Don (1978), for which he won a Filmfare Award for Best Actor, Sharaabi (1984), Aks (2001) and Piku (2015), for which he won a National Film Award for Best Actor.
Bachchan has also made many television appearances, hosting popular Indian shows such as Kaun Banega Crorepati, Bigg Boss and KBC, and stepped into politics at various times during his life.
The Sharjah International Book Fair is celebrating its 38th year and will welcome dozens of high-profile speakers over the 11-day event, including authors Orhan Pamuk and Vikram Seth, as well as US comedian Steve Harvey.
