Billboard: Adele dominates 2012

Plus: LA Reid not returning to X Factor; Lincoln leads Globe nominations; Police foil plot to kill Bieber; One Direction is MTV's top act.

Billboard magazine says Adele is the year's Top Artist and her album 21, released in 2011, is this year's Top Pop Album. Adele earned both prizes last year. Billboard's top three songs are Gotye's Somebody that I Used to Know, Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe and fun's We Are Young. Drake is the Top Male Artist, One Direction are the Top New Artist, Maroon 5 is the year's Top Group and Taylor Swift is the Top Country Artist. - AP

LA Reid not returning to X Factor

The veteran music executive LA Reid is not returning to The X Factor US next season, he announced on Thursday. Reid, currently the chief executive of Epic, a division of Sony Entertainment, joined the show last year along with the series' creator Simon Cowell. This season also boasts Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges. The show's finale is next week. Reid helped launch the careers of singers including Rihanna and Justin Bieber. - AP

One Direction are MTV's top act

MTV has awarded its 2012 Artist of the Year honour to One Direction. MTV says the fivesome are "the clear choice for the top spot" after a year that included two No 1 albums and a sold-out world tour. One Direction's Louis Tomlinson called the award "the icing on the cake". The group also made Barbara Walters's list of most fascinating people of 2012. MTV chose Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe as Song of the Year. - AP

Lincoln leads Globe nominations

Steven Spielberg's presidential drama Lincoln topped the Golden Globes nominations on Thursday with nods in seven categories, followed by Argo and Django Unchained with five each. Les Misérables, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty scored four nominations each. For best drama, Lincoln is up against Argo, Django Unchained, Life of Pi and Zero Dark Thirty. The best comedy or musical nominees are The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misérables, Moonrise Kingdom and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. On the small screen, Downton Abbey was nominated for best drama, alongside Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland and The Newsroom. The 70th annual Golden Globes show will be held in Los Angeles on January 13 and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. - AFP

Police foil plot to kill Bieber

A jailed man whose infatuation with Justin Bieber includes a tattoo of the pop star, has told investigators that he hatched a plot to kill him. New Mexico court documents released on Thursday reveal that Dana Martin persuaded a man he met in prison and the man's nephew to kill Bieber and Bieber's bodyguard. He told investigators that Mark Staake and Tanner Ruane were headed to a Bieber concert scheduled in New York City last month but missed a turn and crossed into Canada from Vermont. Both men were arrested and face multiple charges stemming from the alleged plot. - AP
