Timeframe: From Vietnam to RAK
This image of Ras Al Khaimah's fort is not only interesting because of the ad-hoc air conditioning unit installed in one of the windows. But also because of who took the photograph - Horst Faas. At the time, Faas was making his name as a war photographer for the Associated Press in Vietnam. He won Pulitzer Prizes for his work there, and for covering the Bangladeshi war of independence in 1971. He also visited the UAE during this time, snapping photos of fishermen, historic buildings and people. This photograph was taken at some point in December 1971 - the month the UAE was formed. Faas passed away in 2012.
