First look: Helen Teede exhibition at Showcase Gallery
We have just received the first two images from the new exhibition set to open in November in Showcase Gallery. Helen Teede, who was born and brought up in Zimbabwe and later moved abroad to study, is fascinated with using the medium of bones. Heavily influenced by her childhood in the African bush, she sees bone as something already marked, a palimpsest. What she finds interesting is that the surfaces of bones can be read and interpreted as textual testimonies of the lives they succeed.
The Bone Book, pictured here, captures exactly this sentiment and so does her other pieces which use found bones and other natural material.
“The more I read the earth, the more I find stories that are rich, layered and fascinating. The earth’s text allows me to traverse time, bringing the past – as far as a hundred and sixty million years back – into the present. It makes me intensely aware of my own fleeting presence in the world,” Teede says.
