A raft of new works on display as part of Artography, which runs through the end of the month.
Dubai's Art Couture gallery reopens in Festival City
Remember Art Couture, that little boutique dedicated to works by the owner Cynthia Reta Richards and her comrades, tucked away in Dubai Marina's Al Fattan Towers? The gallery upped sticks late last year and has reopened in Al Badia Golf Club in Dubai Festival City.
A little out of the way, perhaps, but the space has joined fellow Dubai galleries by returning to the post-summer fray with a raft of new works.
Richards, originally from Canada, has produced a series of "art butterflies", titled Countless Blessings, each measuring 10 centimetres square and each priced under Dh200. From each sale, Richards will use Dh25 to create a special wall of 365 golden butterflies to debut during Art Dubai, "emphasising the countless blessings that can be achieved in just one year", she says.
The Italian photographer Giuseppe Tuccillo trained as an architect but, since 2006, when he moved to Kenya, has pursued his dream of being a professional photographer. Now living in Dubai, Tuccillo's latest images – titled Silence – attempt to "engulf the viewer in a moment of peace and quiet".
Drawn from Tuccillo's travels around the world, the images have an accidental quality about them, despite his measured day job as a fashion photographer. The moments captured appear unplanned – lonely roads, open landscapes and an emphasis on the silence that "captions" each photograph.
Finally, the Syrian photographer George Edward Shahda has manipulated and melded portraits from fashion shoots he has worked on. The bodies conjoin and meet, together forging geometric forms akin to the patterns often found in ornamentation throughout the history of Islamic art.
"I owned my first studio in the Old City of Damascus," says Shahda. "My studio was in the style of an old Damascene house, with Islamic ornaments all over the walls. I tried to picture it in a modern style and thought of developing these ornaments into something unique."
