Alserkal Arts Foundation has announced an open call for its inaugural research grant programme, which will accept applications until January 31, 2020.
The new initiative is meant to support individuals or collectives who are undertaking or plan to undertake innovative research in the humanities and social sciences.
In March of this year, the foundation was established by Abdelmonem Alserkal, the founder of Alserkal Avenue, an art district in Al Quoz, Dubai. It continues the programmes run by Alserkal Avenue over last decade in a more formalised context, including commissions, residencies and educational initiatives.
This current open call casts a wide net, accepting applications from practitioners such as visual and sound artists, architects, independent publishers, fiction and non-fiction writers, documentary filmmakers, educators, geographers, historians, economists and social scientists.
The grant extends to practitioners around the world, with preference for those whose research revolves around topics linked to arts, humanities and social sciences in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia region.
Through an online application process, researchers must present a proposal outlining their project, including the topic, theoretical framework and methodology that they intend to use. Applicants must be over 21 years old and have at least five years of experience within their respective fields.
Individual awardees can receive up to $5,000, while duos, collectives and independent publishers can receive up to $10,000.
