Keep your eyes peeled at Abu Dhabi Art for the work of Alfred Tarazi, the artist who, last month, was named as the winner of The Sovereign Middle East and North Africa Art Prize. Tarazi is Lebanese and, through his art, he tackles an ongoing project for the creation of a memorial for the victims of the civil war in Lebanon. These efforts have resulted in several public installations and artistic interventions in Beirut through which he has developed his own language to question the very nature of how to commemorate and document the event.
“It is a tortuous process in many ways, because of the history and the ever evolving political situation,” he says.
At Abu Dhabi Art, Tarazi’s work A Fair Trial and Execution is on display in Galerie Krinzinger. It is a 13-metre artwork presented on a spool inside a glass case, which the visitor can turn to view the whole piece.
Tarazi’s work is also on display at the fair in the booth of Galerie Janine Rubiez with another piece on a scroll.
“I am developing a visual vocabulary to build an image of what a memorial is and I am also interested in showing my piece in Abu Dhabi because of the current memorial that is being built here in UAE for the martyrs,” he added.
