Lauryn Hill released from prison
Lauryn Hill walked free from a federal prison on Friday. The Grammy-winning artist was released from a low-security all-female facility in Connecticut, according to federal prison records. She was incarcerated for three months for failing to pay federal income taxes. The 38-year-old still faces restrictions: three months of home confinement and a year of supervised probation. She’d also been ordered to pay penalties and the taxes she owed. Her lawyer, Nathan Hochman, said Hill has since fully paid her taxes. On the same day of her release from prison, Hill released a new song called Consumerism – a fast-moving track that puts the spotlight on various “-isms”, such as scepticism and narcissism – via her official Twitter feed.
It’s a boy for Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez
A representative for the 47-year-old actress confirms that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez welcomed their son on Saturday. E! News reports that Berry delivered the baby at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. This is the second child for Berry. She has a 5-year-old daughter with her ex-boyfriend, Gabriel Aubry. The two settled their custody battle over the child in 2012. This is the first child for Martinez. The French actor and Berry married in July.
Miley Cyrus rules SNL as host and musical guest
Miley Cyrus told viewers she wouldn’t be twerking on Saturday Night Live, but commanded the stage on this week’s edition of the NBC sketch comedy show, serving as both host and musical guest. The young singer received plenty of criticism in August for her MTV Video Music Awards performance. During Saturday’s opening, Cyrus made sport of the hubbub surrounding her racy display, joking that she used to think twerking was cool but changed her mind “now that white people are doing it”. Besides participating in several sketches, she performed two songs. Her album, Bangerz, is out tomorrow.
Ben Stiller’s new film premieres at NY festival
Ben Stiller premiered his most ambitious directorial effort yet – the James Thurber adaptation The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – at the New York Film Festival. The 20th Century Fox film was screened on Saturday ahead of its red-carpet premiere at Lincoln Center. The centrepiece of the NYFF, it was a hometown launch for the New York-native Stiller, whose film is also set in the Big Apple. But while the festival platform offered a prestigious debut for Walter Mitty, it also started on rocky ground with critics. The film, which Stiller directed and stars in, was met by decidedly mixed reviews that partly diffused the assumed Oscar hopes of the film. The film is scheduled for release in late December.
Stallone and Schwarzenegger ‘fake brawl’ included in Escape Plan
The action-movie heroes Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger put up a fake fight and were seen raining blows on each other on the sets of their forthcoming film Escape Plan. The “fake brawl” that the two shared looked so real that the director Mikael Håfström decided to include the sequence in the movie, a statement said. Escape Plan is out on October 18.
