Sides hailing from the Emirates struggled badly in last year's competition, with only one of the four teams involved, Al Shabab, winning a group game, and none progressing through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Expectations were a lot higher ahead of this season's tournament, but, as it turned out, it was more of the same for the UAE's delegation. Jazira were beaten 2-1 at home by the Qatari league champions Al Gharafa and Wahda, the Pro League leaders, went down 1-0 in Esfahan to the Iranian team Zobahan. Abel Braga, the Jazira coach, was left baffled by his team's below par performance, saying: "We have lost matches but never like this one. We didn't fight even after scoring a goal, which was disappointing.

"This was a game we would like to forget," added Braga. "We didn't create as many chances as our opponents, but I expected my players to come back and score more after we scored. "That didn't happen. This is the first game and we believe we are still in the competition." Igor Castro, the Brazilian striker, scored the only goal on the hour mark to sink Wahda in their Group B encounter and their coach, Josef Hickersberger, blamed the slippery conditions underfoot and the adverse weather for his side's setback.

"I was not completely satisfied with the condition of the pitch," said the Austrian. "My players complained the grass was slippery and that was why they could not control the ball properly. Also the weather was windy, which caused problems for us. "Zobahan were mainly trying to defend their lead and they were able to do that. We did miss some good chances." apassela@thenational.ae
149YYSPORT2010022500000020100225000000100ARhttp://adedit.ad.atl.publicus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100225/SPORT/702249925070224992520100225100000000277d4c6e95258210VgnVCM100000e56411ac____941c84b241158210VgnVCM100000e56411ac____e9417fdfa2448210VgnVCM100000e56411acRCRD
