A lorry driver burnt to death after his vehicle caught on fire while driving towards Sharjah on Saturday.

The accident occurred on Emirates Road near Al Rahmaniyah district at 4pm, police said.

The identity of the driver and cause of the accident are still unknown.

Civil Defence and ambulance teams from Sharjah and Dubai rushed to the scene to find the lorry overturned and on fire, according to Maj Abdulrahman Khater, director of Sharjah Police traffic awareness and media.

Meanwhile, traffic patrols diverted traffic on Emirates Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed street, through Umm Al Quwain, causing major delays.

"Senior paramedics were also at the scene but sadly they could do nothing to save the lorry driver, who burned to death after his vehicle caught fire," Maj Khater said.

Lt Col Saeed Al Suwaidi, director of Sharjah Civil Defence, said crews from several fire stations, including Al Saja’a and Muwalih, were dispatched.
