The United Nations secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has expressed appreciation of the efforts of the President, Sheikh Khalifa, towards enhancing international peace and development.
The UN chief addressed his remarks to Ahmed Al Jarman, the outgoing Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, in a meeting to mark the end of the ambassador’s tenure in office.
Mr Ban commented on the UAE’s generous contributions to the UN’s funds and programmes related to humanitarian issues and human rights, as well as assistance to disaster-hit and developing countries.
He also asked the outgoing ambassador to convey to Sheikh Khalifa his wishes for further progress and prosperity for the UAE and its people.
The two sides exchanged views on political matters and issues of common concern, in particular the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, the crisis in Syria and the war-torn country’s chemical-weapons arsenal. Ways of enhancing cooperation between the UAE and the UN were also discussed at the meeting.
Mr Ban praised the diplomatic efforts of Mr Al Jarman, reflecting the UAE’s growing role in international multilateral efforts. Mr Al Jarman has held the position of permanent representative since 2007.
