ABU DHABI // Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has approved the final design of the UAE Memorial as a lasting tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes.

The monument, to be built in time for this year’s Commemoration Day on November 30, will be in Memorial Park close to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

It will comprise a series of metal panels each supporting the next, signifying ties between the Armed Forces, families and citizens at times of adversity.

“The UAE Memorial symbolises the ultimate sacrifice of our heroes who have set the greatest example of giving and heroism,” said Sheikh Mohammed, also Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

“The values of patriotism, loyalty and selflessness displayed by the sacrifice of the UAE’s national heroes have immortalised them in the collective memory of all Emiratis, including their leadership,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

The park will include a large plaza with terraced seating, public gardens and a pavilion for quiet contemplation.

A reflecting pool will mirror the memorial.

The love, loyalty and sense of belonging that the nation’s heroes demonstrated remained a source of pride and honour, not only for their families but for the nation as a whole, said Sheikh Mohammed.

He said that Emiratis would always cherish and remember with pride their heroism and sacrifices.

Designed by British artist Idris Khan, the monument will be the centrepiece of the Memorial Park and will include the name of each martyr.

The park will also feature a visitors’ centre to show the role of the UAE’s heroes in serving their nation.

Building work on Memorial Park will be supervised by the Martyrs’ Families’ Affairs Office.
