A six-year-old girl has drowned while swimming in a hotel pool in Ras Al Khaimah, police have said.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Tuesday but were unable to save her.

Police said initial investigations had revealed the girl was swimming with her mother and younger brother at the time of the tragedy.

“The girl drowned after her mother was distracted by her younger brother," Major Abdullah Al Nuaimi, acting director of Al Shamil city police said.

“No one noticed her at first and when they did they tried to perform first aid until the ambulance arrived. Sadly, she was already dead."

Officers urged parents to keep a close eye on young children while swimming and also called on hotels to step up efforts to provide qualified lifeguards.

Last month, a nine-year-old Emirati boy drowned off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah while enjoying a day out with his family. The boy was in the water with his two older brothers at the time.
