First female Emirati envoy at the UN in talks with secretary-general

The United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon has enthusiastically welcomed the UAE’s first female permanent representative to the UN on Thursday.

ABU DHABI // The United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon has enthusiastically welcomed the UAE’s first female permanent representative to the UN on Thursday.

Lana Nusseibeh, a veteran of many leading positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met Mr Ban in New York.

He described her appointment as a reflection of the increasingly prominent role being played by women in the UAE, the state news agency Wam reported.

Ms Nusseibeh spoke of her eagerness to represent her country at the world body.

“I am privileged to represent the UAE as we strengthen our engagement with the key challenges facing our region and the world – security, disarmament, human rights, women’s empowerment and sustainable development,” she said.

“We look forward to working with the exceptional men and women of the UN and our fellow member states to advance an agenda that seeks global stability and prosperity through collective action.”

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said Ms Nusseibeh’s appointment came at a time when cooperation among nations was crucial.

“The UAE has long played an active role in the international community and will continue to play such a role,” Sheikh Abdullah said.

“We are looking forward to strengthening our partnership with the organisation at this critical juncture.”

In their meeting after a ceremony in which Mr Ban accepted Ms Nusseibeh’s credentials, they discussed cooperation in renewable energy and humanitarian assistance.

The talks also covered the central role of the UN with Syria and Ms Nusseibeh reaffirmed the UAE’s support, as she did for its commitment and adherence to the UN’s principles and objectives.

Before her appointment she served in several positions within the ministry, recently launching its policy planning department as its first director.

Ms Nusseibeh served as deputy sherpa for the UAE before the G20 meeting of industrialised nations, helping to lay out the groundwork for agreements at the forum.

She was one of the special envoys for Afghanistan and Pakistan, a member of the UK-UAE ministerial task force, and of the ministry’s special committee on Syria.

As the head of the International Renewable Energy Agency Task Force, Ms Nusseibeh played a part in Abu Dhabi’s winning bid to host the Irena headquarters.

She studied for a master’s in history from the University of Cambridge and a master’s from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
