Fire breaks out at Patchi Chocolate warehouse in Dubai’s Al Quoz

A major fire breaks out at a sweets warehouse in Dubai’s Al Quoz Industrial area this evening, the second factory fire in the area this week.

DUBAI // A blaze broke out at a sweets warehouse in Dubai’s Al Quoz Industrial area 2 in the early evening on Wednesday.

Firefighters, an ambulance, police and a helicopter were deployed to the scene where the fire, the second in Al Quoz this week, broke out about 5.45pm.

Civil Defence officials say there have been no reported injuries or deaths so far.

“The warehouse belongs to Patchi Chocolate,” said Lt Col Abdulrahman Belshalat, the director of the Al Barsha station at the Dubai Civil Defence. “It took about an hour and a half to get it under control.”

It is believed that more than 140 factory staff, from across the Middle East and South East Asia, work in the Patchi Chocolate factory.

Lt Col Belshalat said the fire spread quickly because of the building’s contents.

“It’s a chocolate manufacturing warehouse, so everything inside was for cooking, like oil and food,” he said.

About six teams from Civil Defence were at the scene.

Dubai Police tweeted: “There is a major fire in a sweets warehouse in Al Quoz Industrial Area. For your own safety, we request you do not [come near] the site.”

Joann Joseph, 16, who lives nearby in Al Khail Gate, said the fire was “burning like crazy”.

“The firefighters were at the scene immediately, it didn’t take long,” she said. “But as they were trying to put the fire out, it got worse. It looks very bad.”

Last Sunday, a fire broke out at a fashion warehouse in Al Quoz, leaving one man dead and another missing.
