Thousands of schoolchildren and teachers were evacuated from a school in Al Garhoud after a fire broke out in a first-floor classroom. 
A Dubai Civil Defence official confirmed the incident and said that the fire started in an air conditioning unit in the classroom at Al Khaleej National School.  
A total of 2,200 pupils and teachers were evacuated but no injuries were reported, Civil Defence said. 
Smoke billowing from the school caused panic among pupils after the fire started at 11.50am.

One parent said that it was a chaotic scene and that she seen two children with asthma that had fainted.

Civil Defence said they reached the scene five minutes after the fire, which they described as moderate, started and that it was under control by 12.40pm.  
Four firefighting units were sent, from Al Rashidiya, Karama, Al Ras and Port Saeed.
