DUBAI // Dozens of families and groups of friends gathered for Eid fireworks celebrations last night as the first night of the holiday began with a bang.
However, there was some confusion when the fireworks went off about 30 minutes or more earlier than many had hoped and in a different location than expected.
In the busy Umm Suqeim 2 area, many had gathered on the streets and the sand to get a glimpse of the show which is scheduled to be on for the duration of the holiday at 9 each evening in the open beach in Umm Suqeim 2.
However, at 8.25 fireworks went off much further down the beach, closer to the far end of Jumeirah.
Groups had thronged to the spot with many people taking picnics and blankets to make an evening of it as the weather begins to cool.
Amateur photographer Jamal Ahmed had come with his camera equipment to shoot the show but said he was “disappointed” it had not been the spot he was expecting.
High winds from earlier in the day had calmed making it a balmy evening to mark the start of the holiday. Dubai Police had issued warnings in the afternoon for drivers to take precautions due to rising dust in the emirate.
That did not put off Shamia Khan who came with her family for the evening. “We always love to do things as a family for Eid,” said the Pakistani mother of two. “The kids love fireworks so this was the obvious thing to do. The weather hasn’t been great but we are just so happy to be outside again after a long hot summer.”
Abdul Malik, a taxi driver from Bangladesh visited the spot to see the show on his break. “The roads can be quite busy for Eid which makes it quite stressful to work so it is nice to be able to stop and see something like this when I am on my break. I heard it was happening so made sure I was in the area in time to at least see some of it.”
Even from afar, he said the show broke up his long shift.
