DUBAI // Three men broke into a pastry shop and stole charity boxes containing about Dh4,000, a court heard.
The boxes were only noticed as missing when a worker arrived the following morning and saw the shop door had been forced open.
The defendants broke into the Al Baba pastry shop in the Bur Saeed area on March 10, 2009 after the shop closed at about 11pm, it was alleged at Dubai Criminal Court.
The next morning, a worker at the shop WH, 29, said she saw the front door forced open when she arrived at 7:30am. “I then noticed four charity boxes missing so I called police,” said the woman, who is from Lebanon.
Police said that the defendants have been involved in similar robberies and would split the stolen money between them.
AS, 28, from Pakistan was not present at Dubai Criminal Court on Thursday to face a charge of armed robbery while his Afghani accomplices AA, 34 and BJ, 25, denied the charges.
It was not clear when the defendants were arrested or why the case took four years to be referred to court.
The next hearing will be on December 30 to bring AS from his detention cell.
