DUBAI // A man stopped at Dubai Airport with more than a kilogram of cocaine inside his stomach told a court yesterday that he was “just passing through”.
D S, 34, from Nigeria, admitted a charge of smuggling and possessing 1.3kg of the drug, but told the Criminal Court he was not smuggling the drug into the UAE.
“I was heading to another country, I was just passing through Dubai,” he said.
Dubai Customs inspector A B, 24, an Emirati, testified that she became suspicious of the man at about 1.45am on June 28 this year.
“He caught my attention when I noticed he was very tired, fatigue was very obvious on him, and what made my suspicions grow was that he was coming from Brazil,” said the inspector.
She said he was searched but no drugs were found on him. However, an X-ray scan showed he had swallowed a large number of capsule-shaped objects.
“He was arrested and referred to police then hospital where 78 capsules of cocaine were found inside his stomach,” said the inspector.
The next hearing was scheduled for November 14.
