Classical music isn't just meant to be performed on stage - it's meant to fill the classroom, too. This, at least, is the message that the world class performers of the Abu Dhabi Festival are sending to students in the UAE this week. As we report today, the cellists, flautists and singers who grace the stage of the Emirates Palace Auditorium these next two weeks will also demonstrate their skills in schools around the emirate, with stops at the Abu Dhabi Autism Center and the Special Care Centre focusing on students with special needs.
As educators work to rid the UAE of the cultural stigma attached to disabilities such as autism, there are few mediums more powerful than music. It can inspire, motivate, and, as scientists are increasingly discovering, offer an alternative way of learning for children whose minds are programmed differently.
