Everyone knows where to go if you want to find something so esoteric and obscure that it cannot be located in any of Abu Dhabi’s upmarket malls, department stores or speciality shops.
That place is, of course, Mussaffah, where the prevailing wisdom is that no matter what you seek, it will be found amid the warren of tiny workshops in Abu Dhabi’s home of light industry.
So was anyone honestly surprised that Mussaffah was the place where a humpback whale skeleton was uncovered by oil industry geologists?
This was a reminder that as recently as 6,000 years ago when this particular whale met its demise, this part of the world was far greener and lusher than it is now. And that in turn confirms something else that has been said about Mussaffah: that it is the best place to look if you are in the market for a dusty relic.
