It is a sad fact that sometimes we learn from our mistakes only after tragedy strikes. Earlier this month, three swimmers drowned on the same day as Dubai experienced rough weather conditions. Hopefully, the lesson has been learned.

As we report today, rough seas and strong winds are once again expected to lash shores this weekend, with authorities urging people to exercise caution.

Dubai Municipality has posted warning signs telling swimmers that they enter the ocean at their own risk. But beachgoers have said that, in the absence of an adequate number of lifeguards and rescue personnel, more clear and detailed information needs to be provided.

More information is almost always a good thing, but swimmers need to practise common sense. People should be warned about the powerful rip currents and strong winds, but everyone has to agree that the ultimate responsibility for personal safety, for oneself and one's children, rests with the individual.

As the summer months approach, the country's beaches will soon be crammed by holiday makers and residents. The authorities have promised to step up efforts to improve security. And beachgoers owe it to themselves and their families to exercise more vigilance so that the recent tragedies are not repeated.
